Wirtschaftsflaute: Germany in Dire Straits

Germany has spent years talking about Wirtschaftswunder 2.0 with AI-enhanced factories, open data ecosystems, and a fivefold increase in venture capital. In early 2026, it finally looked like the talk might become action and that Germany was starting to show a pulse again.

The ifo Business Climate Index had climbed to 88.6 in February. Factory orders had surged 8% in December: the biggest monthly jump in two years. Defence spending was feeding into industry. German equities were getting upgraded to overweight. Fund managers were expecting growth to return, citing Germany’s €500 billion infrastructure fund and a record €108 billion defence budget. Analysts projected MDAX earnings growth of over 35% for the year.

Then the US-Israeli joint strike on Iran led to the widely anticipated closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which puts Germany’s growth narrative in dire straits.

Yesterday, Saturday, February 28th, the United States and Israel launched the largest joint military operation in the Middle East since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Supreme Leader Khamenei is dead. Iran is firing missiles at six countries. And for the first time in history, the Strait of Hormuz, the artery through which 20% of the world's oil flows, is effectively closed.

What does this mean for Europe? Its gas storage sits at the lowest level since the Russian supply shock of winter 2021–22, and the LNG lifeline from Qatar runs directly through that chokepoint. And when markets open tomorrow, on Monday, March 2nd, we’ll find out what strategic dependence actually costs.

Europe’s demographic dividend has flipped to a demographic drag. The EU’s old-age dependency ratio — 33% today — is projected to hit 55% by 2050: fewer than two working-age adults for every retiree. This mirrors Japan, South Korea, and increasingly China. The growth model that worked for 70 years is breaking.

Europe Inc. waking up from Davos

It was three years ago that I published my first post for Augmented Ideas on Substack. I thought I would be publishing once per week, but that did not happen.

It’s been a tumultuous crisis week for Europe, where the Greenland question could have led to a wide range of outcomes at Davos 2026. Anything could have transpired if you cast a wide net and took in a range of opinions and predictions from analysts, business leaders, and politicians. And yet, we go into the weekend with a Greenland framework agreement in the works after Trump met Mark Rutte, ‘Europe's whisperer-in-chief’. Mark Rutte works on the submarine principle, according to a European diplomat who knows him well. “You stay below the surface, don’t make waves, and surface only when you absolutely need to, to get something done.”
